VILLAGE FAMILIES GET NEW FULLY FURNISHED HOMES FROM EC GOVT
EAST LONDON-------- Poverty stricken families from villages of Ntabankulu received comprehensive Government services through intergovernmental collaboration.
This collaboration comprised of Ntabankulu Local Municipality, Alfred Nzo District municipality, Departments of Human Settlements and Social Development provided school uniforms, 2 fully furnished homes, groceries and garden tools. This intervention was part of the June 16 Youth Month commemoration by the Eastern Cape Government led by MEC for Social Development, Nancy Sihlwayi.
The 2 families who received their homes were happy to occupy their new homes after years of living in squalor. “I don’t know what I can say, I am too happy, it’s like my children and I have a new life now,” said a tearful Nombuyiselo Mafu.
MEC Sihlwayi said government wanted to make an impact that will change people’s lives. She also urged villagers to report poverty stricken families so that there can be an intervention from Government. “Today the dignity of these families will be restored,” added Sihlwayi.
The department plans to build 2050 housing units for qualifying beneficiaries during this financial year in the Alfred Nzo District alone. An amount of R181, 604.005 m has been set aside for the construction of these houses. Alfred Nzo is a rural district with an estimated population of over 832 121 and unemployment rate of 44%. The area has 2,010 informal dwellings, 93 619 traditional dwellings.
