The project comprises the construction of 80 houses, each equipped with a rainwater tank and a ventilated improved pit (VIP) toilet to ensure safer and more dignified living conditions for beneficiaries. Implemented in collaboration with the municipality, the project contributes to addressing housing needs and promoting sustainable human settlements. All 80 houses under the project have been completed.

Among the beneficiaries is 34-year-old Siyamthanda Mbanjwa, who lives with and cares for her two siblings, aged 30 and 20, both of whom live with disabilities. They are dependent on social grant for a living. The family lost their father in 2022. He had applied for and been approved for a house after the family had experienced homelessness and relied on relatives for accommodation.

The handover takes place during October, which is observed as Human Settlements Month. The month highlights the importance of accelerating housing delivery, strengthening partnerships and advancing sustainable human settlements where all communities can live in dignity, safety and security.

Media is invited to cover the handover as follows;

DATE:   Friday, 23 October 2026

TIME:    09h00

VENUE: Mthonjeni Location, Amahlathi LM

Issued by the Eastern Cape Department of Human Settlements.

Eastern Cape Department of Human Settlements MEC, Ms Siphokazi Lusithi, will on Friday, 23 October 2026, officially hand over 12 newly completed houses to vulnerable families in Amahlathi Local Municipality, under the Amathole District Municipality.
