A total of 47 houses will be handed over to the destitute, including the elderly, providing them with a safe environment and basic services. The families have benefitted from the Department\u2019s Lubisi 1000 Enhanced People\u2019s Housing Process (EPHP), a community driven project to improve the people\u2019s living conditions in Chris Hani District Municipality.<\/p>\n<p>The project budget for the EPHP is R151 million for the construction of 1000 houses at 40m<sup>2<\/sup>, the installation of rainwater tanks and building VIP toilet infrastructure services. A total number of 405 houses have been completed thus far.\u00a0EPHP is a project that is driven by community to improve their living conditions, whereby the beneficiaries make decision on their houses. They form Community Based Organisation that is mentored by their chosen Community Resourced Organisation for technical and financial skills, where they are trained and get empowerment for future businesses after the project is complete. The project is spread over 8 villages in 2 wards under Intsika Yethu Local Municipality. The EPHP project won the Best EPHP project in the country at the 2018 National Govan Mbeki Awards.<\/p>\n<p>Amongst the beneficiaries that will be handed over their house is Simphiwo Swelindawo, a 52 years of age husband and father of 4 children living in a tiny roundavel. A destitute Nomakuthiweni Goso, 62, whom is also currently living with her 2 children and 2 grandchildren in a roundavel. Thandiswa Botha is a grandchild who inherited and will be receiving the house on behalf of the original beneficiary, Nofinish Botha.
