DESTITUTE ELDERLY WOMEN TO RECEIVE NEW HOMES IN OR TAMBO
East London——- In efforts to change the lives of impoverished elderly women and other vulnerable groups, the Eastern Cape Department of Human Settlements will handover new homes in Qumbu and Vidgiesville respectively, in the OR Tambo District Municipality tomorrow, 16 August 2019.
The focus on the upscaling of housing opportunities for destitute, vulnerable groups and military veterans has been highlighted as one of the policy priorities by the MEC for Human Settlements, Ms Nonkqubela Pieters. One of the beneficiaries MEC Pieters will hand over a new home to is 62-year-old Gladys Ncedani who was one of the 2017 disaster victims. A total of 1473 people were affected by heavy winds and rains in January 2017, leaving 573 people homeless. The Department is assisting the affected families in 2 phases, the first phase is completed with 260 units. Mama Ncedani has since been living in a dilapidated rondavel with her two (2) children and five (5) grandchildren.
The second beneficiary is 68-year-old Sindiswa Goniwe from Ncalukeni Village in Qumbu. She is physically challenged and living with her grandson. Mama Goniwe was provided with a temporary shelter after she too was affected by a disaster in 2010.
