DESTITUTE FAMILIES TO RECEIVE NEW HOMES IN OR TAMBO
East London ——– The living conditions of impoverished families in the rural village of Mqwangqweni in OR Tambo District Municipality, will be changed for the better when they receive new homes on 13 September 2019. The members of the EC Executive Council (EXCO), led by the Premier Oscar Mabuyane, are this week visiting OR Tambo to leave a legacy in those communities. One such legacy is the Human Settlements Mqwangqweni 1000 Housing Project.
The MEC of Human Settlements, Ms Nonkqubela Pieters together with the EC Executive Council will hand over a new home to one of the beneficiaries of this project. The Department of Human Settlements is prioritising the most destitute and vulnerable in society by providing them with quality homes. Masithembele Noncube Fodo, a 74-year-old grandmother from Mqwanggweni Village, has been living in a rundown mud house with her family of 17 members.
The Housing Project entails the construction of low-cost housing units (40 m2) with internal and external plastering and painting, insulated ceiling, electrical tubing and tiled roofs for a total of 1000 beneficiaries, covering Ward 14 and Ward 32 in Nyandeni Local Municipality. The contract value of the project is R21mil. To date, a total of 637 houses have been completed.
Members of the media are invited to the handover to be held as follows;
