DESTITUTE COFIMVABA MOTHER TO RECEIVE NEW HOME BUILT THROUGH COMMUNITY BASED PROJECT
A destitute Cofimvaba mother of 3 will receive a new home tomorrow, 31 October 2019, through efforts by the Eastern Cape Department of Human Settlements to provide decent shelter to the impoverished families in the province. The house forms part of the Department’s Lubisi 1000 Enhanced People’s Housing Process (EPHP), a community driven project to improve the people’s living conditions in Chris Hani District Municipality.
EC Department of Human Settlements MEC, Nonkqubela Pieters will hand over the new home to improve the life of Vuyelwa Bunzi and that of her children. Bunzi, who is widowed has been living under poor conditions in a mud structure in Rwantsana Village with her children.
The project budget for the EPHP is R151 million for the construction of 1000 houses at 40m2, the installation of rainwater tanks and building VIP toilet infrastructure services. A total of 338 houses have been completed thus far. The project is spread over 8 villages in 2 wards under Intsika Yethu Local Municipality.
EPHP is a project that is driven by community to improve their living conditions, whereby the beneficiaries make decision on their houses. They form Community Based Organisation that is mentored by their chosen Community Resourced Organisation for technical and financial skills, where they are trained and get empowerment for future businesses after the project is complete. The beneficiaries of this project have already received technical training to empower them. The Community Resource Organisation is responsible for planning activities, beneficiary registration and administration, social and actual construction of 1000 houses. The project won the Best EPHP project in the country at the 2018 National Govan Mbeki Awards.
