Housing relief for Chris Hani destitute families

Chris Hani ——– The destitute and vulnerable families in Chris Hani District Municipality will receive much needed relief when MEC of Human Settlements, Ms. Nonkqubela Pieters, hands over 47 new houses in Cofimvaba tomorrow, 21 May 2020. The MEC will also visit a Komani destitute man who has recently received emergency housing in the form of a temporary structure. This forms part of the Department’s efforts to protect the most vulnerable during Covid19 pandemic and beyond.

The Department prioritises the elderly, disabled, child headed families and military veterans, by restoring their dignity through the provision of decent quality houses. The 47 families, spread over rural villages in Cofimvaba, have benefitted from the Departments’ Heritage 489 EPHP Project. This is a community driven housing project known as Enhanced People’s Housing Process (EPHP), to improve the living conditions of 489 families in Cofimvaba, under Intsika Yethu Local Municipality.

One of the beneficiaries the MEC will be handing over a house to is 72-year old Nomhlinzeko Feni who lives in a mud hut house in Dakeni village with her 4 children. The other beneficiary set to receive her new house is 60-year-old Nombheko Ludidi, who lives with her brother and daughter in a one-room mud structure in Ngxwashu village.

The MEC will also visit 55-year-old Monde Qhaba in Komani after he received a temporary structure from the Department. Qhaba’s living conditions were so bad that an immediate relief was necessary. He was living in a dilapidated shack with water inside and outside, making it impossible to move around. The Municipality will also assist Qhaba in getting an ID which has prevented him from accessing government services in the past. He will later receive a house as a permanent solution, under the Chris Hani Destitute 120 project.

Members of the media are invited to the handover and visit to be held as follows;
