Destitute elderly to receive decent new houses in Mt Ayliff

Mt Ayliff ——– Poverty stricken villagers in Mt Ayliff under Alfred Nzo District Municipality, will get life changing assistance from the EC Department of Human Settlements when they receive new homes on Thursday, 04 June 2020. MEC of Human Settlements, Ms. Nonkqubela Pieters, will hand over 24 completed houses in Rode 1000 rural housing project. This forms part of the Department’s efforts to protect and restore the dignity of the most vulnerable and destitute especially now when we are confronted with Covid-19 and with the winter season.

The Department prioritises the elderly, disabled, child headed families and military veterans, by restoring their dignity through the provision of decent quality homes. The beneficiaries, which include the elderly are living in poor conditions, some in unstable mud structures. One of the 24 beneficiaries set to receive a new house from MEC Pieters is 78-year-old Nozipho Gqoli from Madadiyela Village who has been living in a mud house with 2 dependents. The other elderly beneficiary is 71-year-old Nonzwakazi Nyembezi who has also lived in a mud house until now in Madadiyela Village.

The multi-million project is in the villages of Umzimvubu Local Municipality, being implemented in phases and will benefit 1000 beneficiaries all together. A total of 736 houses have been completed to date with some beneficiaries already occupying them. The project entails water tanks and VIP toilets with each completed house. The contract value for the project is R136 million.
