Komani ——– The destitute and vulnerable families of Cofimvaba in the Intsika Yethu LM, will receive new houses from the Premier Oscar Mabuyane together with Human Settlements MEC, Ms Nonkqubela Pieters, on Thursday, 11 June 2020. A total of 47 houses will be handed over to the destitute, including the elderly, providing them with a safe environment and basic services. The families have benefitted from the Department’s Lubisi 1000 Enhanced People’s Housing Process (EPHP), a community driven project to improve the people’s living conditions in Chris Hani District Municipality.
The project budget for the EPHP is R151 million for the construction of 1000 houses at 40m2, the installation of rainwater tanks and building VIP toilet infrastructure services. A total number of 405 houses have been completed thus far. EPHP is a project that is driven by community to improve their living conditions, whereby the beneficiaries make decision on their houses. They form Community Based Organisation that is mentored by their chosen Community Resourced Organisation for technical and financial skills, where they are trained and get empowerment for future businesses after the project is complete. The project is spread over 8 villages in 2 wards under Intsika Yethu Local Municipality. The EPHP project won the Best EPHP project in the country at the 2018 National Govan Mbeki Awards.
