DISABLED BENEFICIARIES TO RECEIVE ENHANCED HOUSES IN JBAY
Jeffreys Bay ——–In efforts to protect and restore the dignity of people living with disabilities and other vulnerable groups, the MEC of Human Settlements, Ms Nonkqubela Pieters, will on Tuesday, 10 November 2020, handover 28 new houses, including those with enhanced features to beneficiaries living with disabilities, in Jeffreys Bay. The handover will be taking place during the National Disability Awareness Month, which runs from 03 November to 03 December annually.
The Department prioritises the disabled through its Destitute and Vulnerable Groups Programme, including the elderly, child-headed households and military veterans, which seeks to provide decent and conducive quality homes with basic services.
The beneficiaries include 34-year-old Rae Malgas who is wheelchair bound, unemployed and lives with relatives in overcrowded circumstances. She will be living in her new house with two relatives. The other beneficiary is 67-year-old Abraham November who uses walking aids and lives with relatives. He will be living in his new house with his two grandchildren. The other beneficiary is 67-year-old Nomvula Tom who has been living in a shack with her daughter and grandchild.
The houses to be handed over to the disabled beneficiaries are enhanced 45m² in size with grab rails in bathrooms, lever taps, lever flush on toilets, 1.1m ramp with hand rails to the front door, kick plates on doors as well as plugs and lights fitted at a lower height in order for the disabled person to reach easily.
All beneficiaries benefitted from the Department’s Pellsrus 220 Housing project, in the Kouga Local Municipality, which entails the provision of services and construction of 220 houses. The budget set for the entire project is R35,6 million. A total of 198 houses have been completed in the project thus far with some beneficiaries already moved in.
