Destitute Great Kei families to receive houses
East London ——– It will be an early Christmas gift for the destitute families, including the elderly in Komga under Great Kei Local Municipality, when MEC for Human Settlements, Ms Nonkqubela Pieters, hands over 2 newly completed houses on Friday, 18 December 2020. This forms part of the Department’s efforts to restore the dignity of the most vulnerable, the farm workers, low income earners and unemployed in that municipality, by providing them with decent quality homes.
The 2 beneficiaries have benefitted from the Komga Zone 10, a housing project which entails the construction of 570 units with water tanks and stands. This Human Settlements development is a part of the land restitution programme by the Amathole District Municipality for 1140 beneficiaries. The project is implemented in phases with the Phase 1, being the 570 units at a project value of R74 million. The project covers 6 villages including farms.
The beneficiaries have been living under poor conditions in temporary structures for over 10 years. One of the beneficiaries include 68-year-old Roy Rasburg who currently stays alone in the temporary structure. The other beneficiary is 57-year-old Nowandile Metsho who is looking after her grandchild.
