MEC KONTSIWE TO HAND OVER HOUSES TO EIGHT DESTITUTE ELDERLY WOMEN IN KING SABATA DALINDYEBO AS PART OF HUMAN SETTLEMENTS MONTH COMMEMORATION
East London——- Eastern Cape Human Settlements MEC, Nonceba Kontsiwe, will hand over new houses to eight destitute elderly women in Mahibe village under King Sabata Dalindyebo (KSD) Local Municipality on 04 October 2021. The handover forms part of the annual Human Settlements month, October, which is set aside by the Department to bring awareness to human settlements delivery. All the beneficiaries are between the ages of 66 and 94 years.
The need to provide safe shelter for these women was identified in a visit by Premier Oscar Mabuyane and MEC Kontsiwe in May 2021.
Five of them are from Mahibe Village and three in Qokolweni Village. The beneficiaries of this project include a 94-year-old Nongamile Mbena who is currently staying in a collapsing mud structure. The other beneficiary is 75-year-old Nogcinile Sitonga who has two dependents. All of these beneficiaries are social grant dependents – currently living in a dilapidated one-roomed mud structures.
The Department is prioritizing the destitute and vulnerable groups in society, focusing on elderly, disabled, child-headed households and military veterans. There are 83 running projects in OR Tambo this Financial Year with a budget of R225 million.
