East London——- Eastern Cape Human Settlements MEC, Nonceba Kontsiwe, will be hosting the Annual Joe Slovo Memorial Lecture, to be held virtually on 18 November 2021. The lecture will be delivered by Professor Somadoda Fikeni, a Commissioner in the Public Service Commission.
It serves as a platform for the department conduct candid evaluations where it can critique and reflect on the state of human settlements in the province. The aim is to talk into the current challenges confronted by the sector and propose alternatives in line with the late Minister of Housing, Joe Slovo’s vision for providing housing in the country. The lecture is also to celebrate the life and vision of Joe Slovo as the founding father of pro poor housing policies in South Africa.
Prof. Fikeni will be speaking under the theme, “Building sustainable communities: A case for the prioritization of the destitute and vulnerable in human settlements delivery in the Eastern Cape.”
The Department prioritises the destitute and vulnerable through a programme that provides decent quality houses to the elderly, disabled, child headed households and military veterans.
