In efforts to provide decent housing for vulnerable communities, including the elderly, Premier Lubabalo Oscar Mabuyane together with Human Settlements MEC, Siphokazi Lusithi, handed over a newly built house to 97-year-old grandmother, Noweyitala “Mamntlane”
Ndolomane in Willowvale. A new contractor was also introduced to the community for a project that will build 250 houses for more destitute families within the Mbashe Local Municipality.
“The case came to our attention through social media and the outcry over the living conditions of the elderly woman. We committed as government to build and handover her house during Mandela Month. We are here today to do just that. We commend her grandchildren for looking after her. The young must protect the elderly in our communities,” said Premier Mabuyane. Mamntlane was living in a mud structure with her 60-year-old son and two grandchildren.
MEC Lusithi said more families who are in need of decent shelter were identified in the area. “We are bringing a contractor who will build for the other families who are destitute here in KuLokhala there are 13 families and in total 250 houses will be built l in Mbashe,” said MEC Siphokazi Lusithi. The new project will prioritise the destitute and vulnerable groups especially the elderly, disabled and child headed families in Mbashe Local Municipality.
“Thank you to the government, now I have a house, thank you to everyone who told my story and has been helping my family,” said Mamtlane.
The 13 houses are for the most destitute and will be constructed immediately.
