Eastern Cape MEC for Public Works, Infrastructure and Human Settlements,
Siphokazi Lusithi, today, 26 November 2024, officially handed over 22 houses to
families who were destitute and vulnerable in Kwelerha under the Buffalo City
Metropolitan Municipality. The handover forms part of the Department’s 16 Days of
Activism of no Violence Against Women and Children Campaign, aimed at protecting
the most vulnerable in society.
“We are here to open the 16 Days of Activism campaign by handing over these houses
to the elderly, women and child headed households. This becomes significant to us
during this campaign because the elderly and women are the most vulnerable when it
comes to abuse. We are therefore issuing out today sustainable housing, building
safer communities one house at a time,” said MEC Lusithi.
One of the families who received their new house is that of mama Notolopitsi Bacwana
(76), who was living under poor conditions in a shack with her son and two
grandchildren. “I am lost for words, but I am very happy, I never thought I could live in
a house made out of bricks, I can only say thank you for this house,” said Bacwana.
The 22 families benefitted from the Kwelerha 54 Project, a housing project that is
providing 45 houses to the identified destitute families in Kwelerha.
This is part of the Department’s activities lined up for the 16 Days of Activism of No
Violence Against Women and Children Campaign, which takes place from 25
November–10 December 2024.
