Eastern Cape Human Settlements MEC, Ms Siphokazi Lusithi, will on Friday, 12 June
2026, officially hand over 45 new houses to destitute families in the Winnie Madikizela
Mandela Local Municipality. Among the beneficiaries are 3 young people whose lives
will be transformed through access to safe and dignified housing. The handover forms
part of the Provincial Government’s Youth Month Programme to restore dignity to
vulnerable households.
Among the beneficiaries is 30-year-old Siphokazi Dumezweni, who cares for 16 family
members, including her younger siblings and their children, in a dilapidated mud
house. The household has no employed members and relies on social grants. Another
beneficiary, 26-year-old Misikhaya Sigebentshu, lives with his three younger siblings
in a dilapidated zinc house in Gwabeni village.
The families are beneficiaries of the Ebenezer 1000 (56) Rural Project, which aims to
provide decent housing to impoverished households across the Alfred Nzo District
Municipality. This phase includes the construction of 56 houses for destitute and
vulnerable families, including three young beneficiaries who will receive homes as part
of the Youth Month programme.
The Provincial Youth Day Commemoration on 16 June 2026 will take place in
EmaXesibeni in the Alfred Nzo District Municipality, to celebrate the golden jubilee of
the 1976 Uprisings and showcase youth empowerment programmes.
