MEC PIETERS TO HANDOVER HOUSES BUILT BY EMERGING WOMEN CONTRACTORS
East London ——– In increasing empowerment opportunities and support to women in construction of human settlements in the Eastern Cape, MEC Nonkqubela Pieters will tomorrow handover completed houses built by women SMMEs in Ndevana location, Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality (BCMM) on 29 August 2019.
The Department appointed 14 emerging women contractors around King Williams Town who form part of the 27 SMMEs currently working in the Ndevana 1478 Rural Housing Project. The SMMEs have been allocated 162 units divided amongst themselves. The women SMMEs have completed 21 houses built for impoverished families in Ndevana location. MEC Pieters made a pronouncement during her Policy Speech to create opportunities for SMMEs through procurement and development opportunities.
The Department has also set performance targets of 30% women contractors in delivery plans to ensure fair representation of women contractors. Recent statistics (Stats SA) have shown that the EC has the highest unemployment rate, at 35.4 %. A total of 6.7 million people are unemployed in South Africa at 29%. This year the Department is targeting to support 103 SMMEs towards sustainable business enterprise.
