MEC PIETERS TO HANDOVER NEW HOME TO DESTITUTE BCMM FAMILY
East London ——– A destitute family living in an informal settlement in Leaches Bay, Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality, will receive a new home from Eastern Cape Human Settlements MEC, Ms Nonkqubela Pieters, on Saturday 18 January 2020. The house has been built through collaborative efforts between the Department and the private sector, aimed at improving the living conditions of the poor by providing them with decent shelter.
The plight of the Mhloli family was reported by the ward councilor to find ways to alleviate their situation. The Department partnered with Mr Siviwe Chippa Mpengesi from Chippa Holdings, who donated the new home to the family.
Mr Mpengesi will personally attend the hand over event. Some of the members of the Provincial Legislature and the Executive Mayor Mr Xola Pakati are also expected to attend. The 62-year-old Mzikayise Mhloli has been living in a dilapidated shack together with his wife and 3 children of which one is blind, for over 12 years. The Department is prioritizing the destitute and poor focusing on the elderly, child headed families, disabled and the military veterans.
The Department has several running informal settlements upgrading projects for the benefit of the poor in BCMM, which include, Orange Grove, Khwezi Block, Mdantsane Cluster 2 and Mzamomhle.
