Eastern Cape MEC for Public Works, Infrastructure and Human Settlements,
Siphokazi Lusithi, will on Tuesday, 26 November 2024, officially handover 22 houses
to families who are destitute and vulnerable in Kwelerha under the Buffalo City
Metropolitan Municipality. This forms part of the Department’s 16 Days of Activism of
no Violence Against Women and Children Campaign, aimed at protecting the most
vulnerable in society, including women, the disabled and elderly, by providing them
with decent shelter.
The 22 families benefitted from the Kwelerha 54 Project, a housing project that is
providing 45 houses to the identified destitute families in Kwelerha. One of the families
is that of 31-year-old Thandiwe Mtikitiki, who is staying in a dilapidated temporary
shelter with her two siblings. They lost both their parents and are dependent on social
grant. The other beneficiary who is set to receive his house keys is the elderly
Notolopitsi Bacwana (76), who is also living under poor conditions in a shack with her
son and two grandchildren.
This project falls within the 1250 houses that will be completed for destitute families
by December in the entire BCMM.
The Department has a number of activities lined up for the 16 Days of Activism of No
Violence Against Women and Children Campaign, which takes place from 25
November–10 December 2024.
