Eastern Cape Human Settlements MEC, Siphokazi Lusithi, will on Thursday, 21
November 2024, handover 40 houses to families who were previously farm dwellers
in Gasela under Amahlathi Local Municipality. The majority of beneficiaries are farm
workers, low-income earners and some are unemployed. They have been prioritised
as destitutes living in desperate conditions.
These include the child headed Nyokana family, comprised of four siblings – the eldest
being Anesipho Nyokana (21 years). They lost their parents in 2021. Two of the
younger siblings are staying with relatives while the others were staying with
neighbours. They will now receive keys to their new home.
This as the Department prioritises the destitute elderly, disabled, child headed families
and military veterans in the provision of decent quality houses. The beneficiaries
received a lifeline through a human settlements project, Gasela 75, which was aimed
to construct a total of 75 houses that will provide secure and affordable housing for the
vulnerable families.
The project already has 35 completed houses with beneficiaries already moved in.
This housing project represents government efforts to improve living conditions for
disadvantaged communities in the area, fostering an environment where families can
thrive with access to adequate housing and essential services.
