Eastern Cape Human Settlements MEC, Siphokazi Lusithi, will officially hand over newly built houses to destitute families within the Amatole District Municipality.
The handovers will take place in two phases:
Phase 1: Wednesday, 04 June 2025 at Zone 10, Komga
Phase 2: Thursday, 05 June 2025 at Gubevu Village, near Keiskammahoek
One of the beneficiaries, Nothozamile Funeka Ngonzi (62) – a farm worker who previously lived in a shack with her four children – will receive a new home under a project aimed at assisting unemployed, low-income farm workers in the Great Kei Local Municipality. Her new home is part of the Komga Zone 10 Phase 1 Land Restitution Programme, which plans to deliver 570 housing units across seven farms/villages in the area.
In line with the Youth Month 2025 theme, “Skills for the Changing World – Empowering Youth for Meaningful Economic Participation”, the project has also empowered 75 young people through skills development and job creation.
In the second phase of the handover, Mama Nonyameko Eunice Msili (97)—who lost her mud house during a disaster—will receive a newly built, fully plastered 40m² house with two bedrooms, a kitchen, and a dining area. Her case was brought to the attention of Premier Oscar Mabuyane, prompting swift action through a public-private partnership. The house was donated by Abakhaya Construction, and meets all National Human Settlements Norms and Standards.
This initiative forms part of the Department’s commitment to prioritizing vulnerable groups, including the elderly, people with disabilities, child-headed households, and military veterans.
