The Eastern Cape Provincial Government, led by Premier Lubabalo Oscar Mabuyane together with MEC for Human Settlements and Public Works & Infrastructure, Siphokazi Lusithi, will on Thursday, 28 August 2025, hand over houses to two destitute women, including a 100-year-old grandmother at Nyarha (Bedford), in the Raymond Mhlaba Local Municipality. The handover forms part of the provincial women’s month commemoration.
The women are destitute and have been living with relatives, prompting government intervention to provide decent quality houses and restore the dignity of the elderly women. Among the beneficiaries is Elizabeth Nontshinga, 100-year-old elderly originally from Olivewood Farm in Nyara. She now lives with her 59-year-old daughter, Vuyelwa, and is dependent on social grant.
The other beneficiary set to receive a house on the day is Amanda Mentoor (38) whose mother Sindiswa Mentoor (69), who applied for the house passed away before moving into the newly built home. Mentoor is unemployed and survives through occasional informal work.
The women are part of the Bedford Nyarha 161 (80), a human settlements project for destitute and vulnerable families in Nyarha. The Department of Human Settlements is collaborating closely with the local municipality, which serves as the project’s implementing agent.
Members of the media are invited to attend and cover the hand-over as follows.
